Jesus in the House of Mary and Martha: The Complete Painting

It has taken nearly three years, but I’ve finally completed and signed this painting.
In the end, I chose to accept the painting’s flaws, rather than to keep trying to fix them. It was both a spiritual and a practical decision— a hybrid of Mary and Martha. I’ve chosen at last not to lament my lack of craft, my lack of classical training, the poor rendition of this hand or that drapery. Does the painting tell the story it is meant to tell? That is the final determination.

For the story of Mary and Martha, and my approach to painting it, please read my blog post from October 1, 2011.

  1. Your painting captures the moment perfectly. The ever busy Martha, peeved because Mary hasn't fallen in line with her busy program to ensure their guests are well catered for; but, "Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her."
